Eligibility Criteria: Who Can Apply?

Only Indian male citizens who meet the specified educational qualifications and age limits are eligible to apply.

Educational Qualifications

  • General Duty (GD):

    • A Bachelor's degree from a recognized university.

    • Mathematics and Physics as subjects up to the intermediate or class XII level (

      scheme) or equivalent.

    • Candidates with a diploma who have completed their graduation are also eligible, provided their diploma curriculum included Physics and Mathematics.

  • Technical (Mechanical/Electrical/Electronics):

    • An engineering degree from a recognized university in specific disciplines or an equivalent qualification recognized by the Institutes of Engineers (India) (exempted from Sections 'A' and 'B' of their associate membership examination).

    • For Mechanical Branch: The degree must be in Naval Architecture, Mechanical, Marine, Automotive, Mechatronics, Industrial and Production, Metallurgy, Design, or Aerospace engineering.

    • For Electrical/Electronics Branch: The degree must be in Electrical, Electronics, Telecommunication, Instrumentation, Instrumentation and Control, Electronics and Communication, Power Engineering, or Power Electronics.

    • For the Technical branches, candidates must also have studied Mathematics and Physics up to the intermediate or class XII level or have a diploma with Physics and Mathematics in its curriculum. 

Age Limit

  • General Duty (GD) and Technical Branches: Candidates must be between 21 and 25 years of age as of 01 July 2026. This means they must have been born between 01 July 2001 and 30 June 2005 (both dates inclusive).

  • Age Relaxation:

    • A relaxation of 5 years in the upper age limit is applicable for personnel serving in the Coast Guard or equivalent roles in the Army/Navy/Air Force.

    • For SC/ST candidates, an upper age relaxation of 5 years and for OBC (non-creamy layer) candidates, a relaxation of 3 years is applicable, provided posts are reserved for them. 

Physical and Medical Standards

Candidates must meet the prescribed medical standards to be eligible for selection.

  • Height: A minimum height of 157 cms is required for Assistant Commandant (GD) and Technical roles. Height relaxation is applicable for candidates from hilly and tribal areas as per central government regulations. 

  • Weight: Weight should be proportionate to height and age, with a variation being acceptable. 

  • Chest: The chest should be well-proportioned with a minimum expansion of 5 cms. 

  • Eye-Sight:

    • Assistant Commandant (GD): 6/6 and 6/9 uncorrected without glasses, and 6/6 and 6/6 corrected with glasses. 

    • Assistant Commandant (Tech): 6/36 and 6/36 uncorrected without glasses, and 6/6 and 6/6 corrected with glasses. 

  • Tattoos: Permanent body tattoos are generally not permitted. However, concessions are available for candidates from tribal areas. Tattoos are only allowed on the inner face of the forearms and the reverse side of the palm. 

Salary and Other Benefits

Selected candidates will be appointed as Assistant Commandants and will receive a starting basic pay of ₹56,100/- in Pay Level 10. The pay scale increases with rank, reaching up to ₹2,05,400/- for the Director-General (Pay Level 16).

  • 45 days of Earned Leave and 8 days of Casual Leave annually with LTC.

Selection Procedure

The selection process is a multi-stage examination designed to test the candidate's aptitude and suitability for a career in the Coast Guard.Clearing all stages is mandatory. 

  • Stage-I: Coast Guard Common Admission Test (CGCAT)

    • A computer-based online screening test conducted across India. 

    • The test will consist of 100 multiple-choice questions (MCQs). 

    • Each correct answer carries four marks, and there is a negative marking of one mark for each incorrect answer.

    • The duration of the test is two hours, and the medium will be English.

  • Stage-II: Preliminary Selection Board (PSB)

    • Shortlisted candidates from Stage-I will appear for the PSB at centres in Noida, Goa, Chennai, Kolkata, Shillong/Guwahati, and Gandhinagar. 

    • This stage includes a Computerised Cognitive Battery Test (CCBT) and a Picture Perception & Discussion Test (PP&DT). 

    • The PSB is of a qualifying nature. 

  • Stage-III: Final Selection Board (FSB)

    • Candidates who clear Stage-II will attend the FSB at the Coast Guard Selection Board in Noida.

    • This stage spans four to five days and includes a Psychological Test, Group Tasks, and an Interview (Personality Test).

  • Stage-IV: Medical Examination

    • Candidates who clear the FSB will undergo a special medical examination at Base Hospital, New Delhi. 

  • Stage-V: Induction

    • Candidates who clear the medical examination and are placed on the All India Merit List will be provisionally selected for training at the Indian Naval Academy (INA), Ezhimala.
